A burst pipe, an overflowing toilet or a sudden leak can cause serious damage to a Prague apartment in just a few minutes — and even affect the neighbours below. Staying calm and acting in the right order limits the damage while you wait for a plumber.
1. Turn off the water at the main stopcock
The single most important step. In most Prague flats the main shut-off valve (hlavní uzávěr vody) is under the kitchen sink, in the bathroom, or in a utility cupboard near the entrance. Turn it clockwise until it stops. If you cannot find it, close the valves under the leaking sink or toilet instead.
2. Cut the power if water is near electrics
If water is dripping near sockets, an electrical panel or appliances, switch off the affected circuit at the fuse board. Never touch electrics with wet hands.
3. Contain and drain
Open the taps on the affected line to drain the remaining water, catch drips with buckets and towels, and move furniture and valuables clear.
4. Call a licensed plumber
Describe the problem clearly and send a photo if you can — it helps us arrive prepared with the right parts. A good emergency plumber gives you a time window and a price before starting.
5. Tell your building manager if needed
If the leak affects shared pipes or a neighbour, notify your building manager (správce) so any communal repairs are handled correctly.
