Protect exposed pipes
Insulate pipes in unheated areas — cellars, garages, near external walls and in second homes. Foam pipe lagging is inexpensive and easy to fit.
Keep a little heat on
If you leave a flat empty in winter, keep the heating on low rather than off completely. A background temperature stops the pipes from freezing.
Know where your stopcock is
If a pipe does burst, being able to shut the water off instantly limits the damage. Find your main valve now, before you need it, and make sure it turns.
Before a long trip
- Keep the heating ticking over on a frost setting.
- Consider draining the system if the flat will be cold and empty for weeks.
- Ask a neighbour to check in during a hard freeze.
